Escola Básica 2, 3 D. Luís de Mendonça Furtado – in Barreiro

Director of Karlsruhe European School, professor Dr. José Mário da Torre

Escola Básica 2, 3 D. Luís de Mendonça Furtado – in Barreiro, represented by teacher Mª da Luz Ribeiro, permanent teacher of this school’s board at the Visual Arts Department, by these means intends to propose to your school an exchange project consisting of the exhibition of Students Works/Pedagogical Experiences in the Visual Arts field and using Internet as main communication tool.

This project intends to be presented as a shared platform, allowing the constant knowledge about the work being developed by some of this school’s students, at an individual level as well as group initiatives, inserted in the field of education through art, specifically Visual Arts. It intends to be able to get various pedagogical experiences also from your school, within the same artistic field.

Goals of the project

To develop a process of pedagogical experiences exchange in the Visual Arts field.

To develop connections based on cooperation, within a frame of learning process and creating situations where it’s possible to confront ideas and experiences, aiming at a greater knowledge in the Visual Arts field.

To develop communication skills.

To consider different experiences as a benefit and a way to enrich knowledge, based on the belief that a more open and equal society creates better opportunities for education and citizenship.

Besides not knowing if this idea will be accepted or not by the Visual Arts Department of your school, I take the liberty to send some of the students work developed during this school year (2006/2007).
The development of these works included three sixth year classes, with ages between 11 and 13 years old.
While programming this school year, I created different didactic unities with the pedagogical goal of “educating” the eye through the contact with works of art, promoting the development of aesthetic sensibility and establishing a dialogue about art. This whole process had already been initiated in the previous year with the same students.

This way, and under the theme “Art and Storytellers”, we proposed the development of works intended to illustrate short stories by Portuguese authors such as António Torrado, Sophia de Mello Breyner and Alberta Meneres.
Motivated by the reflection upon some works by painters from the XXth century, the students interpreted the messages within the stories and conceived visual sequences, exposed in bi-dimensional works (individual work) and in small scenic boxes (group work), illustrating several narrative forms. These works involved various different techniques, such as painting and guache, cutting and pasting various papers previously painted and cut, wire structures and papier machêe.
The works were initially exhibited at the school but then they were a part of an annual group exhibition promoted by Barreiro Municipality at an art gallery in the city intended to develop the love for art and to give a wider visibility to this work developed by students within the community.

As I understand knowledge and exchange of ideas among the students to be a priority, as well as other expression alternatives within the visual arts field, I consider this to be an important project, allowing a great diversity of interpretations and developing sensibility and immagination. I personaly believe that the contact with art has a central role in the development of personality and in the integration of the individual within the system of values for mankind.
My students’ works were photographed and are now a part of a school website specifically designed for the development of this project. Me and the students hope to hear from you soon, giving us an affirnative answer.
